The Challenges and Benefits of Immigration

Students in Cafeteria

Moving to a new country whether you came as a child, a student or as a refugee can create unique challenges for those living in Vancouver.

Many immigrants and refugees struggle with feeling alienated, disconnected, angry or disappointed after arriving in Canada.  Many of the hopes and dreams and expectations for your life here may not have been fulfilled as an immigrant or refugee to Canada.  You may miss the cultural experiences, extended family and celebrations in your home country.

Likely you have experienced racism and discrimination and have found multiple barriers finding your way in Canadian society.

On the other hand, one part of you may be grateful for being in Canada as you are able to express yourself and your gender, sexual orientation and your spiritual religious beliefs in a new way you were not able to in the past this may feel disorienting and difficult to come to terms with.

Your extended family or parents may not accept some of the new expressions of yourself, interests and desires that you have developed since you have come to Canada as an immigrant or refugee.

Our counsellors at Emotion Wise Counselling have walked alongside many clients who are dealing with both the joys and challenges of immigration to Vancouver, Canada.
